Capi festival

What to expect from a “Capi influencers festival”? If you don’t know what Capi is, I’d better start with that: it’s a Dutch company designing lightweight, isolated pots which can be used both indoors and outdoors. And sometimes, they organise a fun day for planty IG-people! So, what does a Capi festival look like? I’ll show you.

Presentation: going ‘greener’

Yes, Capi pots are for your green friends, but Capi is also busy making their business greener. Besides using LED lights in the factory and solar panels on the roof (soon), they also try to ‘close the circle’ when it comes to producing a pot. Eventually, they want to produce biobased planters only! I like that kind of vision, don’t you?

Factory tour

A large storage hall is unfortunately all that I can show you from the factory itself. We were not allowed to photograph the high tech machines due to the risks of copycats stealing their special way of making these insulated pots. If you have a large Capi pot at home: ever wondered why the inside is so orange? That’s the insulating layer, protecting the roots of your plant or tree against excessive heat and frost. There’s a special technique to get that 2nd layer into the pot, and because it’s all Dutch, that layer is painted orange, obviously! 😀

Workshops

I participated in 3 different workshops:

Painting a plate
I would’ve never come up with this myself, especially since what’s in my head never comes out of my hands (that’s why I stick to improv theatre: it dóes come out of my mouth ;-)). However, after a short lesson from Martine (@studiosuikerzoet) I believe I did a pretty good job:
Taking cuttings
Though already familiar with a lot of ways to take cuttings, I did learn something new: when taking a cutting from a woody plant like lavender, you need to make sure you also rip off a piece of the stem. It’s called a “heel cutting”. Judith (@hetgroenlab) showed us everything and then we could take cuttings of our own. Here’s the result:
Photography
Unfortunately my phone does not support all the possible features in Lightroom, but I got some tips from @muk.vl anyway!

Meeting insta-friends

It’s so cool to meet IG-peeps in real life! So here they are:

Conclusion

I had a fun day and learned some things about Capi that I really like which makes me more inclined to recommend them to a fellow plant friend. I realise that’s what it’s all about, but I want to stress out that this blog represents my own viewpoint and Capi did not ask for any exposure at all.

Last but not least

Did you notice the photo above this blog post? Those are cupcakes in Capi pots! And every so often, Capi posts videos like this 😀

Aroids: so diverse!
zaagcactus, ric-rac cactus, epiphyllum anguliger

What does it mean if you receive a cactus as a gift? It's probably your birthday or a houswarming gift. After all, a stylish cactus is a hip accessory in a modern living room. However, it was not a suitable gift in the past: it was said that if you gifted someone a cactus, you would secretly experience the recipient as 'prickly' and unpleasant. Or maybe you underestimate the recipient's green thumb? Since a cactus just stand there, on your windowsill, whatever you do or don't do for it. But is that really the case? Let's take a closer look at these spiky statues.
Euphorbia, pointsettia

Euphorbia is a genus with many diverse species. From native Marsh Spurge to Madeiran trees and bulbous succulents. Our poinsettia also belongs to this genus!

In the 17th century, something remarkable happens: botanist Rumphius places a plant between the animal kingdom and the plant kingdom. Why? Because it moved when touched. At the time, such sensitivity was only ascribed to organisms in the animal kingdom. But this was a plant!

Caudex plants are extremely popular these days. But the concept of caudex plant is not so clear. What exactly is it and how do you take care of them?

Confession: until recently, no orchid was allowed in my house anymore… Years ago I had 2 Butterfly orchids and planned to take better care of them, hoping to get more flowers. I did everything to make them feel good! Until one day in the summer I didn't pay attention and the poor plants burned to death on my south-facing roof terrace… Together with my good intentions I threw the plants away. No more orchids for me!

I wrote about a fast-moving plant before, in my article on carnivorous plants : the Venus Flytrap. The dancing plant is also a fast-moving plant, albeit not as fast as the flytrap. Yet it can be seen with the naked eye! I sowed some of these plants and made some timelapses, see the video below.

A succulent plant with partly transparent leaves! I got it from Rogier after our first meeting, about two years ago. This little Haworthia cooperi was a 'pup', a little one that had started growing on the mother plant. This mother plant was collected by an acquaintance of Rogier (with permission) in the Bolo Nature Reserve in South Africa. My love for weirdos in the plant world immediately bubbled up. And there is much more to discover about succulents!
