Prachtige palmen!

Een hagelwit strand, azuurblauwe zee, je drinkt uit een kokosnoot terwijl je aan het luieren bent in je hangmat, hangend tussen twee wuivende knotwilgen. Knotwilgen?? Nee, palmen natuurlijk! De palmenfamilie scoort zonder twijfel het hoogst op vakantiegevoel. In het septembernummer van Gardeners' World hebben Rogier en ik het over deze plantengroep.

Vruchten van de Senegalese dadelpalm en de Canarische dadelpalm



Palmen in en rondom je huis

Voor in de tuin:

De bekendste winterharde palm is de Chinese waaierpalm - Trachycarpus fortunei. Hou er rekening mee dat deze palm veel drinkt. Op warme zomerdagen zul je dus regelmatig extra moeten bewateren. Deze plant is bij de meeste tuincentra te koop. Je kunt ook overwegen om bij een palmenkwekerij te kopen, dan kun je meteen al je vragen aan de experts stellen. Ze hebben ook een veel groter assortiment winterharde palmen. Kijk bijvoorbeeld eens bij Palmexpert.nl. Ze bieden ook veel extra info over het houden van palmen in de tuin.


Voor in de woonkamer:

Goudvruchtpalm (Dypsis lutescens): wordt ook vaak Areca palm genoemd.

Vissenstaartpalm (Caryota mitis): Bijzonder blad.

Waaierpalm (Livistona rotundifolia).

Kentia-palm (Howea forsteriana): de bekendste kamerpalm! Kan tegen wat minder licht, als dat echt nodig is. Liefst heeft nagenoeg elke palm graag veel indirect licht. Dan groeien ze ook het beste. Wil je toch een palm in een wat minder lichte hoek, ga dan voor deze:

Mexicaanse Bergpalm (Chamaedorea elegans): hele sterke plant, blijft relatief klein en compact en kan ook goed tegen ons 'huiskamerklimaat'.



In ons artikel geven we al aan dat de Kokospalm hartstikke zielig is; die is echt niet bedoeld voor in onze huiskamer en de kans is groot dat 'ie binnen afzienbare tijd het loodje legt.


Geen palm, en ook geen varen, maar wél een lekker tropisch tintje: de Varenpalm (Cycas revoluta).


Zaaien?

Zoals aangegeven in ons artikel zijn de zaden van palmen snel uitgedroogd, waarna ze amper nog ontkiemen. Vaak krijg je die ingedroogde zaden van zaadleveranciers. Wil je echt graag palmen zaaien? Koop verse dadels mét pit. Of ga langs bij een botanische tuin en vraag daar of je een vrucht mag hebben. Vaak liggen die vruchten al op de grond, dat is prima! Het vruchtvlees houdt de zaden lang goed.

Ook zou je op specifieke fora of Facebookgroepen kunnen vragen of iemand een vrucht op wil sturen.

Confession: until recently, no orchid was allowed in my house anymore… Years ago I had 2 Butterfly orchids and planned to take better care of them, hoping to get more flowers. I did everything to make them feel good! Until one day in the summer I didn't pay attention and the poor plants burned to death on my south-facing roof terrace… Together with my good intentions I threw the plants away. No more orchids for me!

I wrote about a fast-moving plant before, in my article on carnivorous plants : the Venus Flytrap. The dancing plant is also a fast-moving plant, albeit not as fast as the flytrap. Yet it can be seen with the naked eye! I sowed some of these plants and made some timelapses, see the video below.

A succulent plant with partly transparent leaves! I got it from Rogier after our first meeting, about two years ago. This little Haworthia cooperi was a 'pup', a little one that had started growing on the mother plant. This mother plant was collected by an acquaintance of Rogier (with permission) in the Bolo Nature Reserve in South Africa. My love for weirdos in the plant world immediately bubbled up. And there is much more to discover about succulents!
